Caring for your Tillandsia air plants is pretty simple as long as you are consistent with your care. There are a few air plants species that are very specialized, so these directions will not work for all species, but will work for the majority of the Tillandsia species. Did you know there are over 500 air plant varieties? A lot of the air plants look very similar to each other and some are very hard to tell apart. However, there are some air plants that are so unique you can’t even tell their air plants at all.
Air plants aren’t just green and yellow, nope they have lots of colors and a lot of the air plants actually bloom with flowers! The mexican iontha air plant ranges from green to bright pink as seen in the picture below.
Water Quality
Air plants are only susceptible to pH 8 or higher, or too much salt. Artificially softened water has too much salt for Tillandsias as it will slowly cause die back. You can basically use any water to water your air plants but make sure it’s not distilled water because it is too pure and will pull nutrients out of the plant tissue causing your air plants to die
You’ll want to keep your air plants at a temperature of 40-90 degrees for optimal care and theses plants need light, but not direct light. Placing them by a window is perfect.
